Suicide and Suicide Prevention in Thailand
Suicide is a serious health crisis globally, physically, psychologically and economically. According to the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, the suicide rate in Thailand in 2022, was recorded as 7.97 per 100,000 population. During the crisis of COVID-19, the suicide rate has not been remarkably high due to the close collaboration of all parties concerned.
Thailand has a suicide prevention strategy of educating health workers and increasing the number of health workers, especially psychiatrists. Preventive measures include; providing knowledge to general physicians, monks, teachers, and health care volunteers, raising awareness on social media, reducing stigma, conducting research and collaborating with other organizations worldwide. There are also the National Suicide Prevention Center and the Mental Health Working Group which focus on suicide prevention with representatives from various ministries and associations coming to work together.
